1. Brief

1.1 Variant Name: Blue algae pigment, Spirulina blue pigment, Spirulina protein pigment

 

1.2 Property: C-Phycocyanin belongs to protein combined with pigment, and has the same characters as protein. It is the blue granule or blur powder, soluble in water.

 

1.3 Source: Using the Spirulina of blue-green algae as the main raw material and extracting the pigment with the modern biotechnology.

 

1.4 Character: Its water soluble liquid is bright sky-blue. C-Phycocyanin is a water soluble protein. It consists of a-sigmasubunits and b-units.The monomer(ab) molecular weight is about 40 kD. It exists in trimer (ab) form in PH6.5-8.0 condition. And it exists in hexamer (ab) form in PH4.5-6.0 condition, with a molecular weight of 230 kD. No matter existing in monomer, trimer or hexamer form, it will show beautiful sapphire color and bright color, it will be quite stable in many physical and chemical factors according to the tests.

 

2. Biochemical Properties

C-Phycocyanin is one of the phycobiliproteins, likes phycocyanin. It is a photosynthetic pigment commonly found in blue-green algae, red algae and cryptophytes. The monomer consists of an α peptide chain and a β peptide chain with a molecular weight of about 40 kD, and each peptide chain binds to one molecule of phycocyanin. The absorption spectrum of the trimer has a distinct absorption peak at 650 nm, a secondary absorption peak at 620 nm, an absorption band at 360 and 306 nm in the near ultraviolet portion, and a protein absorption peak at 278 nm.

 

3. Applications

3.1 Food additives: ice cream, chewing gum, powdered drinks, soft drinks, cakes, snacks, candy, jellies, fillings, noodles, mustard, sugar-coated tablets and capsules. [ Non-dyeable foods: kelp, wakame, edible meat, beans, vegetables (excluding processed foods of such foods), fresh fish, shellfish, tea and nori seaweed.]

 

3.2 Cosmetics:  as the safe pigment and additive

 

3.3 Medicine: It covers new areas such as signal transduction, apoptosis, and cell biology. It includes tumor suppressor/apoptosis, cyclins, transcriptional regulators, steroid receptors, protein kinases, growth factors, hormones, membrane receptors, signaling, iymphocyte signals, cell adhesion proteins, structural proteins, phosphotyrosine antibody and fusion protein etc. more than a dozen categories. 

The total number of antibodies is more than 10,000.

 

4. Evaluate

C-phycocyanin is an infrequent pigment protein in the natural world . Not only bright colors, but in itself is a nutritious protein, amino acid composition range, high content of essential amino acids. The body's essential amino acids account for 37.42% of the total weight. 


C-phycocyanin can help regulating and synthesizing many important enzymes needed by human metabolism.
